re-clear coat wheels?
The clear coat has peeled off in several places on my 95 wheels. Has anyone tried those clear coat dissolvers?? Will they dissolve my tires if it gets on it? Does the clear coat in a can turn yellow after exposed to the sun after a few years? I dont want to get them polished or chromed. Thanks in advance for anyones help & comments. :sleep:

Here is what i would have done. Have the claer stripped and have them powder coat the rims. powdre caoting is very strong!! Very strong. I got a price from a local coating outfit here and they said $65 for two rims if i bring them in with the clear off. Yes you will have to take the tires off. find a local place that wy you don't have to spend money on shipping.

On my 1996, the clear coat on just the edge of my CE rims was peeling. It is on the outter edge that is about 3/16 inch wide. I carefully sanded, masked, and sprayed the rim clear coat from a can manufactured by Duplicolor available at O'Reilly's. It turned yellow in a year and peeled off, so I do not recommend it.

I bought clear coat remover from Ecklers (later found out you can get it at autozone for $5). Take the wheel off, apply the remover, wait 5 minutes, wipe it off with fine steel wool, hose it, reapply if necessary - takes about 20-30 minutes/wheel. Then I polished it with Mothers aluminum polish - another 30 minutes/wheel. Has been 2 months and still looks good.

I tried the clear coat in a can and it said right on the can Won't Yellow and in 2 months the wheel was yellow. :mad My wheels are painted and clear coated so I found a local tire shop (The Tire and Wheel Store) that restored my wheel, looks great now . Good Luck. :D :seeya
