Default C4 4+3 Linkage Neutral alignment

I have a 4+3 O/D problem. I had SK Speed rebuild the O/D and have the transmission back in the car. All seems good, but when it is is Reverse, it gets stuck there. I can play around with the 1-2 linkage and it pops out, and 1-2-3-4 work well, then back to R and it gets stuck again. I think this is an alignment problem and I understand it can be adjusted from inside the car, after taking out the driver's seat, and the panel against the transmission tunnel. I don't see the adjustment
Help - How do I this to align????

1987 C4 4+3 transmission Linkage showing a rectangular slot. Is this the alignment slot<br/>

How can I adjust this thing??

I would think it requires a "drill bit" through the shifter and the rods are adjusted at the transmission levers. You need to remove one, two or sometimes all rods at transmission to insert the drill bit but not often. I don't have an early FSM but if there weren't a hole for a drill bit then there would be a "gage slot" like you've pointed out to use.

Measure that slot and make a gage for it.

Here's an old Muncie gage/tool:

"Rich B." mentioned these dimensions back in '02:

You need a flat piece of steel stock, say - .090" thick, .650" wide, for at least 1 1/4" (plus another inch or two to hold onto), to set the Neutral alignment. Loosen all 6 shift rod lock nuts under the car, at the trans sidecover. make sure trans is in Neutral. Insert the alignment tool in the slot in the side of the shifter

IIRC there was a notch on both the upper and lower side of the mechanism. I was able to align my shifter (after a short shifter install) by removing the top of the console and looking down under the boot. You could see the notches on the mechanism for the three linkages. If one was askew, you had to climb under the car and adjust the linkage. Obviously it would be much easier to have a helper watch from above.

It was much easier than pulling the side of the console off and didn't require any special alignment tool

All the talk so far is about aligning the shifter. It needs a pin inserted through the shifter to hold the linkage on center.

Unfortunately the adjustment is made under the car, no way around that.

I didn't watch the video, but the hurst comp plus shifter it shows is pretty much the same. Except it's easier to align, you still need to get under the car.

Ok I watched the video, it's a little misleading (since it shows a different shifter on a different transmission). That set up has the adjusters on the shifter end. The 4+3 shifter adjustment is down by the transmission.

I don't believe the OP is confused about "where" to adjust it's just the "how to" index/alighn and I believe if it's a factory shifter the FSM will show the flat "feeler gauge type" I displayed and "RICH B." mentioned the dimensions of. If there's indeed a hole for a "drill bit" alignment fine but if NOT the OP should be well covered. I believe the OP has it under control and it might well be already DONE!

Default Got It

I got it - Amazingly, It required no adjustment. I unbolted the 1-2 and 3-4 levers, then unclipped R. I then aligned the shifted with a saw blade. (Yes it is a flat not a round like the hurst, but basically the same thing only inside the car) I got the saw blade to go through all the plates. Then rebolted and clipped everything under the car. I needed to shift the 3-4 one slot, but that was it. Reattached and everything works as it should. Amazing - no adjustments, just reset everything and all is good.

Thank you all for the ideas and help. I really appreciate it. This forum and you all have helped a great deal!!!

I just did this on my 86, I made a pin from the print listed above
but after i removed the side of the center console and the seat i looked under the carpet and found one that had been there already

the question is- is this a GM part left from the factory by accident,
on purpose as something every car got
or just something a previous owner left behind

I did a 6 speed swap into my '86 and I didn't find anything like that in mine. I cut out the shifter box section of the tunnel so i would have found it if everybody got one. My guess is a previous owner or mechanic dropped it.

I'm the original owner of my '86 and I got one too! Mine was left in the console.
