Changed my plugs but could not get #8 to go all the way in. Didn't want to force it in case it was cross threaded. Tried a thread chaser tonight but again would only go in s 1/3 of the way. I don't see where going at it from below will work, looks tighter than from above. Sooooo is pulling the surge tank and ac components easier than pulling the head? My fear is the more I dig into it the more damage I'll do.

I bought a neat wrachet from walmart you can spin the handle to loosen or tighten then use it like a regular wratchet worked great on that plug from the top used the plug socket and a open end wrench to break it loose hope you did not cross thread it
I was looking at those spinner ratchets before. That was my next purchase. I think po did the damage since the old plug came out with a few clicks to the ratchet. Could be the source of my rainy day problem.

Hate to say it but think the head needs to come off
one trick you can use (once youve worked out how to turn the thread chaser !) is to apply grease to the chaser thread and turn it in until you meet resistance and know that its cutting , then back it out, check for metal bits in the grease, clean of the grease, re-apply fresh grease and turn it again. keep removing and cleaning the thread, then re-applying fresh grease until your through.
this is the trick mechanics use to cut thru plug threads with the head on the engine
picked up a speed ratchet from H F at lunch and used grease on the chaser as suggested. Was able to work the plug in but ran out of daylight. Feels like it's all the way in and car started on first try after siting in the rain all day. Hope I solved my problems,, thanks for the tips

good effort, working on a vette is just a series of problem solving scenarios !
I use an electric ratchet made by black & decker for hard to get to stuff. I still have to a regular ratchet for busting hard to loosen stuff but once its broke loose the electric ratchet works like a dream.
