Default Huge Disc on Water Pump?

Hey all with the better weather in southern ohio I am finally getting the chance to go over my 88 Vette? What in the world is this huge disc on the front of the water pump? I have a few TPI F body's and they never had this............any down side to removal?

Thanks

If I recall correctly it was intended to dampen vibrations when the AC is on. Many remove it without issue. I believe on the earlier cars it was quite heavy (10 lbs or so I think). Although mine was the newer, lighter version, I removed it about 10 years ago and have seen no ill effects.

Do a search for "frisbee" and you'll see plenty of reading material.

Yes I was going to guess it at about 10lbs. That has to free up the engine some pulling that much weight off of the front.

Thanks for the input.

I thought everyone knew about the Frisbee. Take it off but keep it handy. I removed it off my 88 6 years ago when I had to replace the original water pump. So far so good. I re-used the same bolts plus lock washers.

It is called the frisbee, it was meant to dampen engine vibrations when the AC compressor kicks on.

Take it off.
