From reading here I found that I can use the better timing chain. I ordered the Cloyes chain part #9-3145. I have heard that this chain fits with no grinding in the cover. I heard that you have to fill the hole in timing chain cover with a something to cover the hole left by not using the stock gears and water pump. Some wiring and a relay for the electric water pump is needed as well. I need the regular gaskets, etc too.

A tip for filling that hole. Take it down to your local machine shop... give them the cover, and a nickel (yes.. a 5 cent piece nickel) and have them weld the nickel in place. A nickel is a perfect size, and a weld should cost you ~10-20 bucks at most.

It doesn't look like the guy on this page: http://www.projecttransam.com/projects9.asp
did anything to the timing cover, if you leave the old stuff in place do you need to fill the spot in the timing cover?
Re: Electric water pump conversion checklist (konroh)
You can leave the water pump drive under the timing chain cover IF and only IF you are using the stock chain. If you go to a Cloyes double roller chain you HAVE to remove the gear drive. Most people go with the electric pump to use the double roller chain. Some people just go to the electric pump and leave the stock chain alone or use the GMPP upgrade which still allows you to leave the stock pump running gear in place.

I want to do a hotcam setup next winter, so maybe i will upgrade the timing gear then, for now i am staying with the stock setup and upgrading the opti to the vented style ('95+) so I am just changing the cover.

Say I found this from someone. Does this apply?
Make absolutely sure they use a special water pump driveshaft seal protector when reinstalling the timing cover.
If not the water pump driveshaft seal will get kinked causing an oil leak, slow at first, and then get worse.
The protector looks like a thimble. The GM part number is in the service manual under reinstalling timing cover.(or water pump, can't remember)

Only if you are simply replacing the seal. Although before I went to the electric pump, I replaced the seal without the special tool and never had leaks.
