i have a 1990 it currently has the stock HEI system on it, I want to change the entire system to a MSD set up. Im having a hard time finding a MSD distributor. Im going to use the 6AL set up, new 8.5 plug wires and coil. Any one have any experience with this set up or part numbers. Thanks for any help.

I would like to freshen up the ignion system because its 27 years old and thought MSD would be a good choice. Also I have a fair amount of upgrades to the car and plan on superchrging it and thought it would add some performance.

I'm running a turbo 355 in my '84 with the stock (31 year old) Delco ignition. Runs fine and smooth under boost.
It's your money, but I'd be real curious what you're actually going to improve for what you'll be spending.
I faced the same decision when I did a heads / intake rebuild. I went with stock distributor parts with up grated spark plug wires. I went with a different spark plug, an E3. Great response couldn’t be happier.

What exactly are you going to put on? If you go the route some have and get the Holley Stealth Ram, it mandates you find a new distributor. In my case, I have the 8366 distributor that gets spark from a divorced coil 8223 mounted in the engine compartment. Will they add performance? Sure, if your current system is shot. Otherwise, probably not. I am running 410 at the wheels and that is what I am using. No multiple spark.
It has a 2 step. That's the only difference compared to the 6AL. My 2 step launches very consistent on the street. And they are damn good launches too.

Sounds like a good way to spend a LOT of money on no power increase and a possible decrease in reliability....IME.

I have the edelbrock high flow runners and intake along with a ported plenum so stock size is not an issue although a smaller distributor would be nice. Thanks for all comments but Im guessing MSD does not make a direct drop on replacement?

No, not that I have seen. Still, if you want to make it easier to get a cap and rotor, I'd change to a divorced coil. Otherwise, I'd have a spare one standing by and be fine.
