see if this link works. i wasn't too sure about exactly how to do this mod either. if the link doesn't work, type "spark plug electrode modification" into your search. see, i am more than just another pretty face!
I'm not saying it doesn't work, but I wonder why no plug company hasn't started making out of the box cut back plugs like this and charging a premium price? Isn't this sort of the theory (expose more spark kernel to the air/fuel charge) behind the Bosch +4's that many claim to be gimmick plugs?
My son in law just purchased some Autolite Racing Plugs to replace the V-Power NGKs in his '67 Nova race car. His Nova is equipped with a high performance 350 small block. The NGKs were not available so the parts store suggested the Autolites as replacements. I had just discussed this forum with him and we talked about modifying his new plugs.
When we opened the box, without reading the small print on the box, we were surprised to find they had cut back ground electrodes.
Autolite now sells these as Racing plugs. His Autolite Racing plugs are part number AR134.
WOW!!!! I Can't even believe what a difference....Seriously, I can Really feel a set of the pance difference with this Modification....Un-Real...Took me about a half hour with my Dremel. You really have to do this..... 8-10 free H.P.
What are the best plugs to cut back for an LT1, regular copper AC's? Does a hand file (metal file) work okay to cut them back? And finally, should the gap be left stock spec or closed up some if one has a stock coil?
Use A/C 's Copper or otherwise, I used my Dremel bent out the electrode a bit, cut to where I wanted and Gapped .050" (.045" std) File to de-bur. you don't want any sharp edges etc.
