I'm interested in getting a shift light. What my options for my '92 LT-1 ?? I'd like to mount it where I don't have to make any permanent "damage" to anything.
All you need to do is go to this website, and it will tell you all you need to do. I just did this, and it works wonderfully.
The shift light installed in here is a Harlan mini-shift light. I received it 2 weeks ago. It took about 2 weeks to receive. It cost $55. Seems hi-quality. I like it. No need for removable 'pills' or anything, and its totally concealed. http://hashmarks.com/ShiftLight/index.html
<<I've heard that our tach is inaccurate. Will the shift light be accurate ???>>
I tapped a different tack off the tach wire under the dash and they do read differently. Autometer reads lower. Sometimes mine gets twitchy, and they both jump. Don't know what causes this to happen. Harlan shift light and small Autometer will fit in the vent with some work.
YEs the Shift light will be accurate.. The tach is calibrated winthin the cluster, so another tach (autometer for example) may be calibrated a bit better and more accurate.. this is why you get 2 different readings..

Harlan's the best.
While I think the vent is the neatest option I put mine on the A Pillar for the reason you said. I used the 3m double sided tape to mount it on the A Pillar. Almost unnoticeable from outside the car.
Thanks guys! I just ordered my Harlan yesterday. I ordered the orange light. YUCK! I wouldn't normally consider orange, buuuut I'm thinking it might match my amber dash lighting. Oh well, it's just a shift light.

I love the Harlan. I've only raced with it once, but it sure is bright. I got the green one to go with my green car. Mounted right in that vent, it's the perfect place.
I have mine running on the tach output from my MSD box, so it should be real accurate.

I am running the orange Harlan, don't worry it works and looks great.
DOH! now why didn't I think of that
Well yellow just isn't really a color I'm greatly fond of. As such I didn't want a bright yellow light in my face. Red would have been OK. Blue would have been good, but it cost more. I'm not a big orange fan either. So I was left with red or green. I've always liked green a little more than red, so there you have it.
That's about the only thing about the newer C4's I wish they had done differently. I'm really don't like the orange. Even newer ones with white instrumentation still have the orange backlight on the speedo. It doesn't bother me enough to make me get rid of the car :)
