Ok, one more question....how do you take the serpentine belt off the easiest? I dread having to mess with the alternator, but if I must... its a 96 vette.
vr,
volt
Easiest way is to buy the serpentine belt tool from the parts store. Downside is that it costs like $30 (ouch). Others have fabricated a similar tool from scrap parts, but I am not that handy. If you are really strong you might be able to use just a 15mm box wrench. Using a regular ratchet generally won't clear the frame rail on a '92-96.
I used two box wrenches on the belt tensioner. One goes on the tensioner itself, the second one is large enough to go over the end of the first to gain leverage. It's not difficult. Someone else on here used a 12" crescent wrench I believe. Necessity is the mother of invention.
i was able to just use a 3/8 socket wrench, no problem fitting it in there, then i put a big socket and an extension on the end to get some leverage...was able to take the belt off in a few seconds.
I bought the Serpentine Belt Tool from Mid America. $30 plus shipping. I was getting a couple of other things too so I didn't have to pay shipping just for that. One of the best tools I've ever bought. Made getting the belt off easy. It's long enough to give you plenty of leverage and travel. It even works with the camber brace installed.
I could not get a breaker bar and socket to fit. Just too tight between the frame and the nut.
:)
I took an old wrench that I had. Cut off the one end and welded what was left to a piece of flat bar. No expense except for my labor. It works great. I even coated the flat bar with Plasticote for a custom touch.
Pop the hood. Straddle the driver's side wheel facing forward. Reach into the bay with your right hand and grab the tensioner pulley. Pull up and hold. Reach over with your left hand and slip the belt off the idler pulley. Let off on the tensioner pulley. Groan a little.
thanks, thats exactly what I did, I used 2 wrenches...worked great...not as easy as the belt tool, but almost as easy...took me about 5 minutes.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
oh yeah, btw....im glad I took the belt off....it looked good from the outside, but it was all cracked on the inside.....an accident waiting to happen! :yesnod:

Call doctor for appointment to have hernia repaired.
Its hard to believe but the factory service manual says it is OK to have cracks on the inside. I suspect it is because the way the inside of the belt is under tensile stresses part of the time. It must be the reinforced outer material that keeps it together. FrankLT4CE
