Default hood stuck

I own a 1984 4 plus 3 the hood is stuck closed I made the tool to insert and open the latch, I think.
1) does anyone know the length that the piece that does the work should be. 1 inch, less.
2) does anyone know how far in the rod goes before it gets to the latch. 5 inches, 6 inches.

thank you
Joe
Is there another way to open the latch.

This is the video I used. It took some fishing. But, I got it open and luckily it was only an adjustment. I saw that ecklers sells that tool for $29.00. I went to Home Depot and bent a $5.00 piece of rod.

Thank you for the help

Now, with the hood open, connect some black braided twine to each latch, so you can pull the twine to open the hood, if it ever becomes stuck shut again. Black will match the under hood paint.

I recommend braided twine due to strength, able to flemish/coil in a neat pile for easy access. Available at any hardware store..... others may have suggestions.

You might check the pull cables to see if they are stretched, frayed, or broken, causing the hood not to open.

If you lived close to me, I could have opened it for you. Hood happened to me a while back and I bought the tool, then used it

I bought the tool, not as easy as the video to do, a lot of fishing around...emergency cables are the way to go once you get it open

Yes, emergency 'cables' are prudent, but inspection of existing cables is necessary. Cables stretch, fray, break. Replace the original cables, if necessary.

I really like the emergency cable idea. How did you route them? As for my cables. Presently they are in good condition. The adjuster was not locked in place on the drivers side. It is now adjusted and locked.

I may actually attempt to fix the cruise control. But not today.

Thank you all.

Learn how the latch mechanism works. Then attach braided twine to the pull section of the latch. Braided twine is strong, and
will flemish/coil neatly to be out of sight, but be readily accessible. Ensure you have sufficient length to activate the latch release.

I attached a black nylon tie to each side. Works easily. Also, you might want to tie a boot lace to the emergency hatch release and run it up behind the passenger seat. If you ever need it to open the hatch, it is hard to get to and pull the short release that is at the back of the hatch area.
