Anyone do one of these? Is it difficult? When putting away my 89C4 for the winter, I couldn't get the hood open. After using up my entire vocabulary and a few tricks, I got it open. Passenger side cable shot. Replacement part is $48 and on order, but what can I expect putting it in? Any hints?
Thanks in advance to all.
I'll ride this one with you if it's ok. Just bought a new GM cable set off Ebay and was building up the courage to tackle the installation. Couldn't be any harder than putting the Amp relay in for the Bose radio in.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!! :flag
Not a big job... if you look in the tech tips, you'll find an emergency mod for just this type of issue... check it out, total cost $4... and can save all the extra language u used...
This sounds like a preventive maintenance item that we all should do. I have that tool, but I don't want to have to use it. So, I'll be watching this thread, also. :lurk:
So, we're all interested, but nobody's done it. Not quite the response I hoped for. I just got the cable today.
Anybody know anything? Anyone?
Buehler?

Thanks for the reply. How in the heck did your buddy even get at the grommet under the dash in 1/2 hour? I spent the afternoon today disassembling everything on the inside just to get a peek at it. It's way up there, and I can't get a tool on it. In the past, I've replaced my clutch master cylinder, my starter clutch pedal interlock, and I've had the steering column out, so I'm familiar with the area, but wow! How do you do it?
Vinnie
I'm gonna do the mod as you show it. Thanks for the great picture. If I understand correctly, you loop one end of the cable around the lever or actuator that the normal cable pulls to release the hood, right? You crimp it at that end so it stays on the little lever or whatever it is. Then you drill a hole thru the rail, run the cable thru it and then make a big loop that you release by hand by reaching under the hood.
Ok, the 2 emergency releases are done. I didn't have the cool crimping tool that Vinnie had, and Home Depot had the wire rope but not the correct size ferrules and had no crimping tools. So I used the wire rope (aircraft cable, braided steel cable--stainless would've been nice) and made the same setup like Vinnie did, but I formed the loop with electrical tape and then zip-tied the heck out of it on each end. A-ok!
But I still want to put in the factory hood release cable. I'll leave the emergency in, but it's still a pain to install. Any ideas?
Hey Scorp
Thanks for weighing in. Did you pull the unit into the interior of the car, or did you yank it out on the engine compartment side?
Did you fish the new cable thru the existing grommet or did you install the entire kit? The part I got is an entire assembly including the grommet. The grommet is what I can't get out of the firewall. What did you use to get the grommet out of the firewall? Thanks.
I think I may of just pulled the grommet into the car until it finally broke and gave way. I then fished the lines from inside the car into the engine bay.
