In midst of doing a small cap conversion and I have a question about the dizzy.
Can one mark the rotor location of the large cap and install the small cap with rotor in same location and expect to at least be on the right cylinder and move forward with setting timing?

I believe that you could expect that. What else did you have in mind?
The engine doesn't care how the rotor is oriented. The only important thing is that the wires are in the correct order and that the rotor is pointed at #1 wire when that cylinder is at TDC.
