Default Digital Display going nuts! Help...

My display (86) Vette, blinked off briefing at lunch today. On the way home this afternoon, it started going crazy, dimming in and out, numbers all over the spectrum, etc. Is it toast? Previous owner said he had replaced all the bulbs, etc. Is there any cheap way to fix it? ie- send in old one, get new one. Also, does a new one really cost $1500?

Unless badly damaged, your cluster circuit boards can be repaired. The cluster can go crazy with higher than about 16 volts. Backlighting going out is usually the center of the board most pin on the board closest to the front of the car becoming unsoldered. There is a single row of pins on the front board that plug into a socket on the rear board and age relaxed spring pressure on the socket increases connection resistance and the lamp current causes heat that unsolders the pin. This can best be fixed by soldering a short insulated wire from the rear of the front board pin to the front of the front board socket.

Usually you just have to resolder some pieces in there. If you cant do that then send it off for servicing (Ecklers and Mid America offer it i think).

cool guys. Thanks for the info. (Of course, the damn thing is working fine again now). But, I am sure I will have to deal w/it. I may try to do it myself, God forbid! Well, I guess if I installed that Wheelskin, I can probably do this. haha
