The purpose of the grease is to help the heat conduction. It does that by filling in the AIR gaps (air is an insulator). If you put it on thick the excess will get squeezed out, so I see no problem with doing that. The main thing is to eliminate the air gaps.

Thermal grease is best because it is designed to conduct heat. Dielectric grease is better than nothing.

I kind of disagree about the part where it states conductive thermal greases are superior.For the car probably fine for cpu`s I don't use them. Tuniq TX-2 is what I prefer.
