hey guys i think i posted about this a while back but couldnt get any information on it. how hard is it to replace a humidity damaged optispark with a msd ignition system? if its not that difficult then why isnt it done more frequently? why do people just ge replacement optisparks that just keep giving them problems with humidity? any info on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot
i am not trying to argue with you but why is it not replaceable? you can get msd ignition systems with a distributer and everything along with the spark sensor thing. and i thought the optiaprak was just a poorly designed distributer? im still kinda confused on this. please help me out
Well, if you are talking about dropping in an MSD distributor, you would have to drill a hole in the back of the manifold to put it in. To my knowledge there is no replacement optispark distributor.
hmmmm does anybody know where i can get any information on this being done before?
Probably not, seeing as it really hasnt been done. My suggestion- go with an optispark again, but do the venting/vaccum mods to it, so that it works like a '95/'96, or even go with the newer style opti upgrade (however, you will have to upgrade a few other things). Granted, these opti's arent bulletproof either, but are MUCH more reliable.. You can also put a bead of PVC around the seal of the new opti, which should seal it up a little better.

P.S. Rumor has been going around for a while that MSD is making an opti replacement.. but I wouldnt hold my breath.
ok i dont kjnow much about this optispark deal but i do know electronics and it seems to me that water shorts this sucker out quicker than anything if it gets anywhere near it right? someone has had to try the simplest solution possible for this.... which is seal that bad boy up with some silicone or stick it in a box and seal that thing up so it'll stay dry even if you take a dive in a lake....
so is that possible? if/when i get mine i wont drive it in wet weather ever so i need not worry much about it, luckily.
Stick with a replacement opti. I could explain all the obsticles to swapping for a conventional distributer, but it would take 20 minutes to type it all out. :yesnod:
Actually Mark, I'm pretty sure it HAS been donel. I'll have to dig around for the link to the site with photos of all the work - I actually think it is from somewhere on this forum. Basically you will need a small body HEI distributor without electronic timing control - just good old vacumn and mechanical advance. As was said above you will need to drill an appropriate hole in the back of the manifold, you will also need to eliminate the EGR valve and relocate the passenger side air injection check valve.

Re: optispark (1996man)
Electromotive at one time had a complete conversion kit for the Optispark. I recall somebody using it, and had success...to a point. There was some sort of problem with high RPM cutouts if I remember correctly. http://www.electromotive-inc.com
