Just sold my '88 C-4 this afternoon with 14,000 miles on the odo.
When another prospective buyer was driving it before the other guy came up with an agreeable offer. the muffler came apart right at the inlet - rusted clean through.
I didn't realize this was bad when the first guy drove the car, so I'm trying to help out the buyer... I said if he buys new mufflers I'll bolt them on. (He's not much of a car-guy.)
The car's only seen rain 3 times, so the clamp and the hanger came right off. But... there's still a 12' long inlet pipe (the part that rusted off the muffler) with elbow at the end of the pipe. Cat-back looks to be stainless and in good condition.
How do I get that pipe broken loose from the y pipe? WD-40? Special tools?
Re: QUICK - How do I get the $%$& muffler off? (Greg H)
You may need to remove the rear Y and have a muffler shop use a torch and heat it all up so the metal will stretch a bit. When I had my rear Y replaced, thats what the muffler shop had to do to get the mufflers off the old Y pipe.

A little elbow grease is needed here. Take a ball peen hammer and tap the outside of the pipe all around the joint where the two meet. That should loosen any deposits and corroosion that have formed. Grab the end of the pipe that you are trying to remove and twist it to try to break it free. you might have to tap the joint at the same time that you are trying to twist. Nine times out of ten this twisting/tapping action will free the two. You also could spray WD40 in the joint to speed up the process. Spraying and soaking the joint for 10 minutes also could help.
