I was going to change my fuel filter yesterday and proceeded to get rid of the fuel pressure in the system. I do this by removing the fuel pump fuse and running the car until it dies (fuel lines are empty of fuel). I've done this before and this is the way recommended in Haynes manual and some Vette magazine articles. This time to my surprice the car doesn't run at all without the fuse. Like there is no fuel or fuel pressure at all without the fuel pump running.
I didn't change the filter yet (don't like fuel baths) but choose to investigate this more.
I have 12.5K miles on the filter. My injectors were rebuilt 3000 miles ago and the is no evidence of leaking. So, what do you think is the problem if there is one?
Well, it could mean the fuel pressure had already leaked down, and since there was no fuse, the pump did not provide the 2 seconds worth of fuel pressure. You could reinstall the fuse, apply a fuel pressure gauge, turn key on, note pressure, turn key off, watch for pressure drop. It should hold for some time, don't have the exact spec here. Suspect your fuel pressure may be bleeding off. Let us know.
My 87 did the same thing as far as not starting at all without the fuse. I went ahead and changed my fuel filter anyways and did have some fuel in the lines. I might have lost a 1/4 qt or so. I just used a pan to catch it in, I didnt even get any on the driveway, just a little on my hands. At first I was wondering if it was going to stop leaking but it did. Not sure why it didnt run for a few seconds and pump it out but I know I needed to change my filter so I changed it. :chevy
