Default A/C Delete

So the bracket that holds the A/C broke today. A piece broke at the bolt that goes to the water pump. The AC in my 90' hasn't worked from day so, so I never use it. I figure instead of getting another bracket maybe I should just remove it. My questions are for those who have removed their AC. Which route have you gone? I've read some get the delete kit and some change the water pump and shorten the belt. Does anyone have any tips or steps on actually removing it? What water pump do you need to get? What happens to the belt tensioner? Any help would be great!

I removed the whole A/C, shortend the belt, changed the waterpump and made my own tensioner at the alternator. You can see a little bit of it in this video.

I made the tensioner from a very cheap "boat screw". Google translate calls it a "turnbuckle" in english

Thanks for the links. I read through that thread a few times last night. Seeing as how the thread is a few years old, I figured people might chime in with new info.

First off if your bracket is broken, then you would need a new A/C bracket to use the A/C delete kit on your car because the TPIS delete uses the A/C bracket to connect to.. Figure $75.00-$100.00 for a used bracket and the delete kit is $150.00 from TPIS....I went with the delete kit on my 89 and it works fine with the original belt...I have seen cars that have gone with the new pump and shorter belt and if I was to do it over again I would probably go that route, because it makes the engine bay look cleaner...The one problem I see with eliminating the A/C bracket completely is you get rid of your belt tensioner, so you have to adjust the belt pretty often for the first few weeks because of belt stretch...Most guys say after the first few weeks they still have to adjust the tension on the shorter belt but not as often, just like in the old days.......WW

PS...I almost forgot to tell you, when you remove all the A/C parts from your car, the 2 pronged wire connector that hooks to the little on/off relay on the metel tube has to be cut and the wires hooked together to close the circuit, if you don't do this it will cause a few problems..I can't remember exactly what happened because it's been 5 or 6 years since I did mine, but I believe it set a code and stopped other functions on the climate control from working.....Just cut the connector off, and connect the 2 wires together to close the circuit...

Thanks for this, it's great information. I may go the route of eliminating the AC altogether then.

Can't you just put a jumper wire between the two connectors in the harness? That way if the A/C is to be reinstalled, it's a simple reconnection of the compressor without having to find the harness connector and rewiring.

When the hoses are removed, it's a good idea to use some plastic or rubber caps to cover the lines going into the evap housing. Use some caps on the hose ends and the condensor too. That will keep dust and debris from getting in so when (or if) you want to re-install the system, you won't have to deal with cleaning everything.

Any way you want to connect the 2 wires together would work, as long as you complete the circuit........WW
