My base '88 Vette with the L98 engine often has a rattle when it starts that sounds like a loose piece of sheet metal, i.e., like loose exhaust rattle or a loose cover. I have crawled under it and everything seems tight. Not sure but seems to be coming from middle area of car so makes me wonder if it could be starter related. Anybody encountered this or have suggestions on how to locate the problem. It has been doing this for a while and doesn't seem any worse. Doesn't do this every time it starts but most noticeable after sitting overnight. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Maybe something loose inside the catalytic convertors? I had a car once that did that and it went aay after it warmed up. Try tapping them a little when theyre cold and listen for the rattle.
....When cats start to fall apart inside, they make a rattle sound like your talkng about when the car is first started........Or it could be as simple as a shield on the exhaust being loose or touching ......WW
Thanks for the suggestions! I had thought about a shield or exhaust vibrating against something but had not thought about it loose pieces inside the cats. Will try to check that out next time I have it jacked up. That seems to be in the right area of the car.
