I removed the T155/80D16 spare tire/rim from my 87 to find the bead broke and mud inside the tire. I cleaned it all up and repainted the aluminum rim and re-mounted the tire and pressurized it to 60psi.... only to see how rotted the tire is. Now I need to dismount the old tire and put on a new one. Where can I get one of these tires? Been surfing all day and can't find a source.
I looked for a spare several years ago and was not able to find one. I put in a purchase request with America's Tire Store (Discount Tire) and they couldn't find one either. I finally cancelled the order a year later.
I solved this by buying a Camaro spare (I needed to clear my J55 brakes anyway). The only problem with this is that the center hole is just a tiny bit too small. It's a good thing I checked before I needed it when I was out in the middle of nowhere with a flat. Some filing fixed the problem.
I had heard that the spare wheel in my car was aluminum and had the tire taken off to recycle the wheel. It turned out to be made of steel.
I have an 87 and the wheel is steel.I am parting the car out later .I would consider the spare usable-I have driven on it around the industrial park where my shop is at.But I wont sell it-I will give it away if some body wants it.I dont want to be responsable for it after it goes away.
I can't testify that my spare tire assembly is original. The tire is Goodyear... but the rim is aluminum. I took the tire off and sanded the rim off & repainted it.
I purchased a 155/90R16 locally just for grins. It barely fits in the rear wheel well and could probably be used if you didn't hit any bumps. But... the tire won't fit in the spare tire carrier so I returned it.

My 84 Corvette has been in storage for a number of years and is very close to being back on the road. The spare with the normal sizing of T155/80/D 16 was rotted out. If you're here you probably know that nobody makes that tire anymore.
The link above goes to a brand-new T145/8/D 16 that will mount to my original steel spare wheel. The cross-references will say it's not a go but my mechanic assures me that it is close enough. The height of this tire when mounted to my wheel will be slightly less than the original specified. As long as you go directly to home or a repair shop, no damage should be done as the rear suspension is independent. Any contrary opinions? I'm going to chance it...
The part that might get damaged by an off-sized spare is the differential. The spare is sized such that the od matches the od of the normal tires .The tire from Tirerack is close enough to to the od of the oem tires .The diff has clutches in it for the posi trac. When the back tires are the same od and the car is rolling straight ahead the diff gears are all running at the same speed.
