Default 4+3 3/4 synchronizer worn, common?

I finally figured out what is loose in my drivetrain. I was sure it was the OD, but it's the 3-4 synchronizer in the T10. It has a lot of play and I can see the keys rocking even when I turn it by hand in 3rd or 4th.

60K on it. Common problem or did the previous owner beat on it? Just a regular TPI with a couple minor mods.

Just curious, thanks.

I'd say it's not anything particularly unusual. I would think kits are available for the T10 aspect of the trans. Keys, springs, blocking rings I would think certainly not an issue. Maybe time to just 'tune-up' the T10 aspect with bearings and small parts kit.

This could be used for reference only:

At 60K any manual transmission that 'gets used' deserve a 'tune-up'.

I don't think was much QC when these transmissions were put together. When I went to change the speedometer "drive" gear (removing the OD assembly) I drained the transmission oil and half the countershaft thrust washer came out. After convincing myself this was a good thing (because the trans was coming out anyway) I replaced the thrust washer. It was installed backwards - brass side against the case- from the factory

What convinced you it was the original build? It wouldn't be uncommon for these to get some maintenance - the Warner T10 was generally a very good build. Thrust washers would be part of a 'small parts' maintenance project. How many miles on that one when you disassembled it?

I bought my '86 coupe in 1991. IIRC it had about 64K miles on it. I highly doubt it was ever molested before me. Yes, the (super) T10 was a good trans, but who assembled it Borg Warner or DNE? Either way I would think it improbable that a mechanic that had the equipment to disassemble the transmission would make such a bone-head mistake; but on a assembly line........
