Default Tire suggestions

My car has a set of 16 x 8.5 wheels on it and I need to get new tires. The stock size that comes up is 255/50 16 but my car has wheels from an 88 on it. The tires that are currently on there are 245/50 16s. I'm not finding many options in the 255s but found a few in the 245s. Are there other sizes I should consider?

Any recommendations on brands/models? I've found some Firestone Firehawks that look reasonable (like $300 less than BFGs) but I'm just not sure.

Here's a picture of the wheels that are on there now.

Unfortunately as our cars get older the choices on 16/17 inch tires are getting smaller. With that I have run the Firehawks on C4's and C5's and gotten great wear out of then although they did start to pick up a lot of road noise as they got older.

Yes, I've definitely found limited options. Good to know about the Firestone's though. I had the same tire on a different car and was very happy with them.

I'm no expert but those look like wheels off a 90 and should be 17".

BFG Comp IIs on my 89, excellent tires for the money.

Those are actually the wheels unique to '88s, but agreed on BFGs. The Sport Comps have good grip and a decent lifespan... I'd say they are a great value among relatively few good options.

Yes, I've heard that about the wheels a few times in a few different forums. Supposedly only 1500 sets ever made I think. They're definitely 16" wheels though. The tires that are on there are 245 50 16s. Thanks for the thoughts on the tires. Hope I can get what I'm going to replace these with figured out sometime soon.
