Default new gears

Ok I have made up my mind (now that I know I have 2:59's) I will be changing to 3:73's.. So what I want to know is what else will I have to change (IE. to make the speedo read right)?

You need to call Jeff Kopp at 1 (800)728-8267 and ask for Jeff Kopp. He will tell you the new speedo gears that you need and sell them to you at a discount if you tell him you are a Corvette Forum member. I got mine from hiom and they are right on the money. And if you really want to know how nice of a guy he is, just check my sig. You too can be in his fan club with just one call.

I see this little "black box" thing that zip sells to change the speedo. Will this work? I am not big into dropping the tranny.

I don't know how well the box works, but i decided to use the gears instead. Just did mine 2 days ago and it was simple. You will already have the support beam and drive shaft out so you might as well just change the gears while you're there. It only takes 1 bolt to get the Vehicle Speed Sensor out and and 4 bolts to remove the trans tailshaft housing. Once its off, you'll need a gear puller to get the stock gear off. Very simple, just make sure you get the clip into the hole in the output shaft when you slide it back on. Once its in place, slide the tailshaft housing back on, torque the 4 bolts down and connect the speedo wire and you're ready to go. Heres a link that helped me. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=288585 Good luck, its not that bad of a job.

Call Jeff!!! I installed the 3:54s in mine, the speedo gears and sensor totaled $36.62 shipped to my door. I would suggest splurging for a new tranny tailshaft seal( a few bucks). While you have the rear end out it would be a good time to install a PST bushing(the spring bushing for sure) set along with new halfshaft ujoints(they take a lot more abuse than the driveshaft joints). Since you'll be droping the exhaust you would be saving time slapping in a catback systeml. My 3:54 is a ZIP special and I've been pleased with the company, but $159 for that black box just doesn't make sense. Also, make sure you have 2 quarts of GM differential fluid and a pint of positraction additive on hand. After you get it all back together, go get a good 4wheel alignment and you be worrying about having to pay for new rear tires.

Dakota Digital? is one of the companys that make that box. They have a web page. They tell you not to use it on a vehicle with anti lock brakes. Now some on here say it works fine, but I wonder how you could test it to make sure every thing was working correctly. Jeff sent me my speedo. gears and sensor when I changed mine for about $30.00. The trick is to do it while you have the rear end out. The tailshaft is 4 bolts and it slides off. Good luck with your new gears

I have only been under it one time (to install Corsa) and did not look at it but it sounds like I will not drop the tranny? just have to remove the tail piece, is that right? Thanks for your help I will be calling Jeff when I get the gears....

that's right, you don't need to drop the trans to change the spedo gear. It's a fairly easy job. The gear sits right behind the VSS on the driver's side of the trans.
Jeff is a great guy, he'll be happy to help you out.
