Default Will I need new chip?

I have a basically stock 89 with L98, 49000 miles. I am going to put on headers and want to install new cam. My big concern is : will I have to have a re tuned chip. No one wants to real time tune an 89, and I'm not in favor of mail order chips. If the chip needs to be re tuned, I just won't change cam. I would like to buy an ostrich ll, and see if a tuner would tune it real time. Anyone try that yet?

Hi go for the Ostrich emulator and use the free tunerpro or
tunerpro rt software, you will need the files and bin for the 89.
Then you can make changes on the go, no need to remove replace chip once you have connected the ostrich to the ecm.

visit the scan and tune section for info and tips.
You will need the 89 Y body edf and ads files, see links below.

Save your stock chip settings, this is a must I always have a spare chip to go back to if I have stuffed something up.

Some find it a steep learning curve, others can understand it well after some research.

For headers and mild cam you should be right with the standard setup, the ecm will adapt the engine management.
A wild cam will need idle speed changes etc.

or changing to 383 needing maf modifications, you can adjust so many things like advance curves.

Go for it but be careful and write down what changes you have made where..

I have the same car but unfortunately don't have the planned improvements you do. I went to hyperchip and I'm good with it. I've got more power, especially top end, and about 3 more miles per gallon and I"m a daily driver. They have a wide variety, worth at least looking at for ideas if nothing else.

Headers will not matter. The farther from stock the cam is, the more tuning will be needed. Cam and intake need to operate in a similar RPM range for good results. You are the best tuner for your car, if you have the time.
