I just bought a 86 Convertible with 31,000 miles in July. One thing I've noticed is that the engine chugs a bit every time it reaches 20-25 mph or 1000 rpm or so. It does it every time. I'm thinking it's transmission related. Any thoughts?

type of trans? Auto? Manual?
If its a Automatic, Does the Chug go away with lightly laying your foot on the brake pedal just enough to get the brake lights to come on, which could indicate the lock up converter is coming in way early.
It's an auto. I will have to try your test next time I take it out.

If it's the lock up converter, what are we talking for a repair?
before you do any repairs, jack the car and unplug the wiring from the side of the tranny. now go for a drive. is chug gone? this was how i pin pointed it out on my 85.

More then likely it is the lock-up converter and the repair is a new chip to raise the lock-up speed. The factory setting is too low in my opinion and causes the engine to chug.
you should be able pick one up for about $100. +- the trick is to find a Performance chip, and I am sure there are some folks on the Forum that can give you a good source and even a proven part #

Bjansk is probably correct. He helped me diagnose my red z51 '85 that was doing the same thing.
However, I encourage you to unplug the electronics from the 700r4 and just make sure first. That is what I did. this will not allow the tcc to lock up at all. it will not hurt the car, and if your problem goes away, then you know its the tcc causing the issue. then move on to bjansk's suggestion. when you find a chip, can you post which one you get? i need to buy one as well. right now the car is running without the tcc. so, my mpg is a bit lower.
its on the driver side. reach under there and disconnect it. picture here:
Wait if it is the converter causing your problem this means the lock-up solenoid is stuck or broken and needs to be replaced this can be done by removing the pan on the transmission the solenoid is located in front of the valve body with 2 10mm head bolts holding it into the pump body there are 2ways they sell this part the solenoid by itself where you cut the wires and splice it in or with the whole wire harness which is simply remove old and plug in new, the solenoid alone cost around $30 and the whole harness is about $60
