The A/C on my 86 didn't work again this summer. It is an electronic control unite. I am getting a "01 Feedback Potentiometer open" code when I go to diagnostic mode. I think that it controls the temperature door. The fan never comes on but the compressor will cycle on and off. Can anyone advise to what an "Feedback Potentiometer open" is?

Thanks

The electronic fan speed control module has burned, this happens when the blower motor starts drawing too many amps to work due to wear , bushing drag etc. replace the blower motor and speed control and this should fix your problem unless it has burned the wires and switch also which is a possibility but I honestly have only seen it once in my 33 years of working on cars and the only electronic unit I've seen wipe out the whole control system was the early 80's caddies there ac control system was crap

I have the service manual and I have looked at the trouble shooting steps. As soon I put the car up for the winter I am going to dig into it and see if I can enjoy next summer. That's very much for the response.

Thanks very much for the response. I will check that out as soon as I can, but where is the speed control module? Is it located in the main controller or is on the ECC board.

It's on the top of the evaporator case in the engine compartment.

The feedback potentiometer is inside the temperature blend door motor assembly. It tells the HVAC controller the position of the blend door. If you pull the CTSY/CLK fuse it will lose the position information and will recalibrate. It does this by moving the blend door to the maximum heat position and then to the maximum cold position. It's most likely that you have a bad connection or broken wire somewhere in the blend door motor to HVAC controller circuit. Maybe this will be helpful:
