At first, I just wanted to replace the mast, but everyone tells you that you should open the base to check for the broken piece. The antenna didn't have any screws or bolts, just plastic rivets (if that is correct) and I mutilated it taking it off and even more so trying to put it back together.
To make a long story short (and I know, too late) It took just as much work, and I still ended putting a new one in.
even GM sells it for a reasonable price - mine was $15 or so
my '89 was a cinch (?!?) guess i was holding my mouth just right.
also, it had screws holding the case together so removing the broken bits and gunk buildup was no prob.
i serviced it on a dairy case beside the vehicle while the wires were still attached (except for the ground wire).
I think that my motor still works, but I'm unsure as to whether or no I need to replace the entire motor, or just the antenna mast... I think just the mast because it stays up, and I can hear the motor churning, and sometimes the mast goes down.
i bought my replacement at autozone. i wouldnt suggest anyone buying theirs there because not only do i have a mount sticking through the body, i have an antenna that gets me accuse of being affiliated with nasa. i mean this thing is 5 fet tall. :)
He probably tried to fix it himself and didn't realize you have to go through the hatch to reach the wires disconnect.
At first, I didn't realize you had to do it until I had my hand all the way up following the wires and felt the little hole going into the body. Just a guess.
I just found out that if you go to a dealer for a replacement, they now have a generic replacement. Instead of unplugging teh old wires and plugging in the new, you now have to splice the new wires in.
Yep, been there and done that one. The only problem I ran into was the mouth full of dirt and debris that came falling out of the fender when I was under there... :cry
I can only imagine that he couldn't find the connectors in the back. When the antenna mast cable is broken the antenna motor runs until the antenna is up or your battery is empty. Cutting the wires is a little drastic, i gues.
