I own a 96 Coupe that has recently developed a problem with its keyless entry/security system. For some reason it will no longer lock the doors when I exit the car, or unlock the doors when I approach the car. I thought it might be a bad battery in the key fob, but I changed it to no avail. Also, when I get into the car the door locks begin to cycle between lock/unlock by themselves and the hatch begins to pop open repeatedly....it even popped open while I was driving.
Anyone heard of this problem? Anyone know how to go about fixing it?
I thought (and could be wrong) that you could disable the automatic lock/unlock feature on the 96 with the keyless remote. This doesn't solve your problem, but it will prevent weird things from happening until you can fix it (hatch opening while your driving?)
Check your manual, thats where I remember seeing it.
If you want to deactivate the PKE system, hold down the door button on the FOB
for about 5 secs. you shud hear/see the door locks cycle. Reactivating is the same procedure. It sounds like you may have a problem with the door/ajar switches?
Bryan,
Mine started doing the exact same thing on Friday! We tried replacing the battery also, but of course that wasn't it. Right now I have to mannualy lock/unlock my car until we figure out what this problem is. Have you been able to fix yours yet? If so, how? Unfortunately, I don't have my owner's manual.
Please let me know if you find out anything and I'll do likewise.
I think I replied to an email you sent earlier in the week, but for some reason my email server just delivered it to me again...so I figured I would cover my bases.
When my was messing up it wouldn't lock/unlock when it should have but would do it at the strangest times...including 'popping' the hatch while I was doing 35 mph down the road...that isn't good.
All of a sudden the other day it starts to work. The only problem I have now is that it takes a lot longer for the car to lock upon exiting, the interior lights do not stay on now before locking, and I cannot turn the PKE system on or off with the remote.
If you find anything else out please let me know also.
Have you thought about hireing an exorsist? I have never heard of that happening. If it started working again thats great, but if it doesnt you probably wanna have someone look at it. The unit maybe going bad.
My 95 does the same thing :mad So to fix it I took my keys off the remote and hid it in the house :smash: as far away from where I park my car as I can  I use the key to unlock the doors, it not that hard. But if someone comes up with the cure it would be nice. :yesnod:
Bryan,
Yes, I did get your e-mail, thanks! Mine is now de-activated until we can get it looked at. My husband thinks it may be a fuse, but he would rather have someone look at it that knows what they're doing. It's a pain in the butt having to use the key to unlock...I'm spoiled on the PKE!

Check owner's manual for procedure for programming each keychain transmitter to work with the car's reciever/xmitter. I had same problem and that fixed it on my '95. Might have been the batteries ran low enough in the keychain xmitters to cause loss of recognition by the car and now even with new battery it won't work because the car no longer recognizes the keychain's code because the keychain's code needs to be programmed back into the car's memory.
If that doesn't work, try pulling the battery juice on the car and let it sit awhile, then reconnect car battery and go through keychain programming procedure per the owner manual again.
This problem actually started a few days after my car's battery went totally dead. Possibly that messed up something in the computer. I will have to check and see if disconnecting that battery will fix my problem.
