I have a 1988 Automatic L98. I'm looking into getting an MSD ignition for it. It currently has a stock distributor. Do I have to upgrade the dist if I want to install a 6a MSD box and coil or will it plug into the stock dist?
Unless you have a boosted engine or it revs above 7000 RPM, you're wasting money and adding possible problems. The HEI is a great system, even for most modified engines.
I cannot speak to stock programming, but the '90 GM ECM in my car shuts off fuel above 6300 RPM: a rev-limiter.

Ive got the Mallory Hyfire 6a in my car (its the same as the MSD)
Running the stock dizzy, but with a Mallory 55,000 volt coil, MSD cap and leads.
As people will always let you know (probably talking from experience) putting a multi spark box in is a slippery slope !
you will need to upgrade (e.g. buy the good stuff) the cap, the in cap coil, you will need to buy the MSD adaptor harness because they just wont work properly in a HEI without one, and mounting it in a c4 engine bay is a challenge.
They do make a difference (in a race environment), but is it worth it for a street cruiser ?
