I have a motor with $2,000 worth of upgrades, from heads to ported slp runners, etc. I either have a main bearing out or a rod....seems like a rod. I have saved about $5000 for the project and Im looking for advice. 1. If I hired the work done, can I have it pulled, repaired, and reinstalled for that? 2. Would it be better to just buy a crate motor and have it installed? If so, can I have that done for $5000 or am I way off?
Just trying to figure out what the most cost effective way to move forward is where I have it all up and running again. I don't need a major performance upgrade. I was happy with what had already been done.
I don't know what all can get messed up in there when a rod blows, but it was running before. Assuming no major curve *****, is it feasible to think I can get it done for $5k or not? Perhaps a less "open ended" question is the other side of it. Would it be possible to purchase a crate motor (ive seen 325-350 hp long blocks for $2900 or less) and have it dropped in and running properly for $5000? Surely someone ought to have an idea of what I would be in to on something like that. With all the experience on this forum, I would have thought I would have plenty of direction by now.
5K should be more than enough to correct lower end knock. I read your previous post about knocking. I'm sure the local corvette club can point you towards a good corvette shop that guarantees their work. It would be worthwhile to price a short block. You can have oil pan pulled and bearings checked to see if there is a obvious failure. Since the engine has been into twice already; replacing shortblock and transferring your heads,intake,cam, ... etc could be a practical solution. Good Luck

It's only been 2 1/2 hours since your original post. Me thinks you're expecting too much! We all have lives to live!
If you've already put $2,000 into custom parts in your engine, I sure wouldn't want to throw those away! $5,000 should be more than enough to repair a bad rod bearing. Of course, there's no way to know how much damage has been done until the pan is removed, and a complete inspection is done. Good luck!
