Hi there, I have a strange rubbing noise coming from the passenger side area - can be head inside and outside. The noise is hard to describe, but it sounds like a deep loud fast vibration, like something is adjusting (or a fan rubbing i guess) that can last for maybe 5 sec and erratic and random - I've heard it while just sitting there at idle, or while on a long trip. It doesn't happen all the time.
If someone can point in the right direction of what this might be, this would be much appreciated.
First thing would be to get it up on jack stands and start checking things out, Could be brakes, wheel bearings, u-joints or just a piece of trash caught up on something. or maybe the blower motor. maybe an accessory on the motor or belt tension er .
Determine when it happens ( hot or cold) and first remove the serpentine belt and restart the car for a short period. If you dont hear the noise you can narrow it down to the accessories. With the engine off, spin each one to see if you can feel any roughness or hear any noise. If you dont hear anything, you will have to delve deeper into other things.
Follow all the suggestions above, especially the fan blower. Look closely at the front of the engine for any shiny spots where the balancer may be rubbing due to weak motor mounts.
Rotate the tires back and forth and listen to the power steering pump.
