I bought it from the second owner who only had it for 2 months and blew a head gasket, the original owner did a lot of work to it, 6 piston brakes with 2 piece rotors, front & rear springs, much larger sway bars, big radiator, full borla exhaust, my guess is it was autocrossed, second owner said 1st owner had just done the clutch, so I doubt the original owner who had so much money in the car did a cheap clutch job, but ill never know whats in there till I take it apart. second owner has no idea how to contact 1st owner for me. car only has 68,000 miles, probably hard miles to need a clutch that soon but car is pretty mint convertible. best is I only paid 2K for it. I did a miniram and a cam, mildly ported stock heads, still need to do headers, gonna disconnect serpentine belt and see whats up, If I don't find anything gonna leave it like most of you have and just make it louder so I don't hear it, lol
I have a 1989 with the same noise problems. its loud when its warm out and quiet when cold. It happens at idle in neutral when driving it's fine. I hate to pull up to stop lights its embarrassing. I have a brand new DM flywheel that i will be putting in over the winter and changing the clutch also. I am guessing this is normal?
Mitch
No, it's not normal, on a stock car. If your car currently has a single piece flywheel, then results vary but noise in neutral, at idle, w/the clutch out (engaged) is pretty common.

so its normal with clutch out, not normal with clutch in? is that correct?
and the fact that there is no change either way means its not tranny related? could be accessories? if it were a crack or problem with flywheel. shouldnt it change with clutch in or out?

Correct.

The fact that there is no change when the transmission is in gear and the clutch is disengaged means it's not tranny related, because none of the parts inside the tranny can possibly be moving (when the car isn't rolling).

It could be accessories. But google a picture of a dual-mass flywheel and you'll see why Tom said it could be that, IF you have a DM flywheel still on the car. It has internal moving parts and it's not hard to imagine them wearing and getting noisy. And that might or might not change with clutch position.
But like he said, you're going to have to start listening with a stethoscope or metal rod and just resort to basic troubleshooting.

That is correct IF you have a single mass flywheel, If you have a properly functioning DM flywheel it should be quite at all times.

To me, that is what it means. If it makes noise w/the car in gear, then in really can't be the gears making noise...has to be something else.
