Bad or unplagged sending unit for the analog gauge. That sending unit is found on the Passenger side head between Cyl 6 and 8. The digital gauge gets its info VIA the ECM and the sender for that is located at the front of the intake. This is why one gauge works and the other does not
Jeff- you were so right. I just checked it out and the sensor was unplugged. Easy fix. (I thought both guages would run off the same sensor)
thanks
Is this true for all years, my interest is 1996 LT4. I thought both gauges ran from the sensor on the right side of the block. My digital gauge always would show the thermostat "cracking" about 10 degrees above the rating, i.e. 190 for the 180 & 170 for my current 160. GM service explained this descrepancy that the gauge location was not same as thermostat location. It seems to me the one at the front of the engine would read the same temperature that the thermostat sees. Can anyone help me get my mind straight on this subject.

Yes all years meaning 90-96, 89 and older had only one user gauge. I would think the Gauge at the front of the intake will be Very close if not the same as what the Thermostat sees and the Digital gauge is the one connected to the front of the intake.
