I am possibly lookin into getting some new gears for the car. Where should i start? Who has the best prices and what are the specs on the gears that will fit my car? Im goin from 2.59's to something in the 3's. Suggestions would be very helpfull.
The lowest gears Dana ever made for your 36 ICA rear axle, is 3.31:1. These gears have been discontinued. They may still be found in some inventories. The commonly available ratio is 3.07:1. With OE gears, once you cross over the 2.73 line, you will have to go to a "3 series" diff case. That is the case that the ring gear bolts to. The after market offers lower ratios. Some are offered with a "thick ring gear" that will allow installation on your "2 series" case. Watch what you buy, and be forewarned. OE and /or a "thin ring gear" you need a "3 series" case. "Thick ring gear", no other changes necessary. Have fun and RACE ON!!!

So if i'm looking to switch my stock 2.59 gears for a set of stock 3.07's, I'll have to get a 3 series case...correct?
I ordered my 3.54's from Randy's Ring and Pinion. They have very good prices and are extremely knowledgeable. The gears were Dana, but came in a Yukon box.... Oh, and I spent 215.00 for the gears, and 115.00 for an overhaul kit (shims, bolts, bearings, seals, etc.)
I was thinkin of maybe 3.55's. So what exactly should i ask for or look for. Most places should know what to give me right? I mean if I tell them the specs on my car?
Before I called Randy's I checked out their Web site... IN one of the bio's, one of there sales associates indicated that he was a Corvette owner. I asked for this associate and we talked corvettes for a while and then I asked specific questions about what I wanted. I knew that for my manual '85, I could not just order any Dana 44 gears and expect them to drop in. As he explained, for the corvettes, the yoke is a D60, whereas the rest is D44. They have been doing this a while and have a lot of knowledge. I would call them and go from there.
I called them today as a matter of fact. I did talk to Brad...the vette owner. Thnx. He set me up with some 3.54's. He was very helpfull...thnx for your help shamvette.
