Today, I finally got around to taking my car to the drag strip for the first do time ever. Hopefully, some of you reading this can help me put today's results in proper perspective. I have a 92 LT-1 stroked to 383, auto trans, 3.54 gears, lightly-modified Trick Flow heads, 3000 rpm stall, cam is 231/239, .571"/.589", 112 LSA, etc. Now, I haven't raced a car in 40 years so this is literally the initial launch. I did absolutely no advance preparation since I had not intended to race today. I was planning to just observe and get a feel for what it's like being back at a drag strip after all the years. Well, I'm here now so I might as well see what she can do. A nice track employee directs me into the proper lane and I immediately stage without so much as doing any kind of burnout even though it's only 45 degrees outside and my tires are inflated at whatever might be normal street pressure. I'm guessing they're probably hard as rocks so "just drive her down the track and the MPH will tell me something." The light turns green, I try launching her off the line, and it seems to take forever before she settles down and starts going both forward and straight. After a short ride, the race is over and a nice lady gives me a slip that says 60 foot time = 1.96 seconds (yes, I know VERY SLOW ... please be kind as it really has been 40 years), 1/4 mile ET = 12.223, MPH = 114.67. I have no idea whether I should be optimistic about this car's potential, but I'm thinking that if "Old Bessie" had the benefit of a decent driver (I'm 63 years old) today's the ET could easily have been sub-12 flat. I don't know, did we do good for the very first time or should I be concerned?

......... You did GREAT ! ... Buy yourself a pair of Mickey Thompson Drag Radials and go have a LOT of fun ........ 45 degrees ? I feel for you ... today was in the mid 80's here ... our weather is just starting to get nice ........
like you say, your 60 foot time sucked. But put some drag radials on and heat them up next time and your will be there. Time and MPH are great, especially for your first time out.
No. I'm technologically challenged and went to the track by myself. Just wanted to get her down the track a couple of times to get a feel for what lies ahead. I thought it was a good result for the first time. I'm optimistic.
You did great, 1.96 60 ft on street tires at full pressure is a good run. A 12.22 at 114 MPH would be an easy 11.80 with a 1.7 60 ft. A set of drag radials would get you there no problem. Your current tires may get you there. Try rolling out slow and then rolling on the throttle to maintain traction. I have gone 1.80 or better with street tires just rolling on the throttle.

Thanks. Sounds like my car has the potential to be pretty quick if I can learn how to drive her. I'll buy some Nittos or something and try to find some opportunities to work on the launch. We have some nice asphalt in the area that's not under much surveillance!!!
I'd say that you did pretty fantastic for your first time out. Nice job!
That sounds like a solid 60 time w/no burnout, overinflated tires no prep work at all except rolling off street and saying what the heck! Lets do this! Def 2-4 tenths can be taken off that 60 ft though with just finesse driving out of the hole and sticky tires, I say great job!
