Default Please Help.. 84 PWR STEEERING Problem

Hi guys. I sure hope ya'll can give me a little advice.
I had power steering fluid leaking around the pump supply hose from the reservoir and the pump return hose from the steering rack.
Those hoses were 31 years old so out with the old and in with the new hoses.

There are a LOT of bolts that must be removed to get to the pwr steering pump and bracket.

So.... got everything back together and thought Bob was me Uncle... but Noooo. Apparently Mr. Murphy was with me all the way.

After getting EVERY THING back together with Blue LockRight on all the bolts and cleaning everything up to make the engine compartment soooo pretty.....

The reservoir was also leaking which I could see after putting everything back together.
Replaced the reservoir. Put everything together again.

Filled the reservoir, it was late and cold so let it set until the next day.

Next day went out to the garage to check and finalize the pump installation.
Looked in the reservoir and THERE WAS NO FLUID !!
Arrrgggggghhh

Filled the reservoir with a little fluid and saw no leaks.
Got under the car with my drop light for about the 50th time and could see fluid leaking from the BACK of the pump. Just a small trickle.

Now I have the pump and pump bracket out of the car.

I need to remove the pump pulley so I can access the bolts holding the pump to the bracket.
I have the FSM, the Hanes Manual and the CHiltons manual for this cat.
All of my manuals call for a power steering pulley removal tool AND a power steering pulley installation tool.

I have several pullers, 2 Jaw, 3 Jaw, long leg 2 and 3 jay, short legged 2 an 3 jaw AND a 10 ton hydraulic press.
Even got the harmonic balancer remover tool and the harmonic balancer install tool.

I'm really good at McGyvering up stuff but I know you guys are also good and some better than me although I've been doing this stuff on our personal vehicles for a LOT of years. That concrete floor is MUCH harder than it was when I was 25 years old. At 65 it is truly painful to roll around on that floor. Don't even ask me what the next day feels like.

So I thought I'd ask ya'll what the easy way to get the pulley off and then back onto the new pump without the 'specialized' tools.

I don't mind going buying them but this is most likely the only time I'm ever going to need them. Don't want to rent them from XXX Auto Parts, I'd rather just purchase them.

But I'm SURE theres some tools and stuff in my shop that will do this. Just need you McGyvers out there to do a little neuron download for me, LOL.
Oh, I have some BFG's too. And a Hot Wrench. LOL

Sorry this is so long guys... and THANKS in ADVANCE for helping the 'old guy' out.

For the power steering pulley I'd suggest the "right tool". Most attempts to MacGyver generally destroy the pulley or worse. I don't know if AZ, AA or others offer this as a loaner or not but I'd think so and ask. I believe that AZ mentions this tool as a "loaner" so don't MacGyver anything.

Patience and the "right tool"!!!

Use the correct tool. Don't MacGyver this.

Cheapest puller/installer to buy is the Harbor Freight -
http://www.harborfreight.com/pulley-...set-40749.html

Till tomorrow there is a 25% coupon code available -
http://www.harborfreight.com/

I have the HF puller and though it isn't top quality, it gets the job done. Just remember to grease the threads. Otherwise, just borrow the tool from Adv. Auto, Autozone or Pep Boys.

I tried the one from HF and it was complete crap, wouldn't work on my car. The one from Autozone worked flawlessly. It worked so well that I bought a new one from Autozone to keep.

Thanks for the great advice guys.

The manual talks about TWO tools.
One removes the pulley from the pump shaft.
The other installs the pulley back on to the pump shaft.

Are we talking about needing TWO tools to accomplish this?

I'm going to buy a new tool or new tools. Just would like to know what I'm talking about.
Thanks again for the info.

I would NOT buy. I would rent/free loan the AZ tool since it's been mentioned to be of quality from a "regular poster" whose quite responsible. If you're wanting to buy maybe wait and buy the Kent-Moore product on eBay or whatever.

Are you referencing the HELM/GM FSM when you say "manual" or another publication? There should be J-XXXX references for them. Post the J-XXX information.

The same kit is a puller/installer. I would just rent it from autozone. They take a $40 deposit and you get your money back when you return it.
