Cleaned IAC but have questions about reinstalling...
Hey guys,
So I took my TB off and while cleaning it up I cleaned the IAC as well. I've read a bunch of different how-to's on how to do the cleaning and reinstall, but I'm a bit unsure about one thing.
I read that "It is important to get the pintle fully retracted into the housing so that the pintle is not forced against the gears when reinstalling the IAC unit in the throttle body."
but the thing is I can only get it to look like this, not fully retracted.
Is this what it is supposed to look like?
And lastly, the directions say "When the worm gear on the pintle shaft is clean and dry, apply one drop of clean light oil to the shaft and work the pintle back into the rack gears of the motor by the same rocking motion. It takes a while to get the pintle back into the worm gears, but you'll get it."
but when I was installing the pintle back in I rocked it back and forth and it was slowly going in and then all of a sudden the whole thing slid back in. I'm a tad worried something isn't right because it said 'it takes awhile' to get it back in.

I haven't personally dealt with this one but I have on several other cars. I can tell you for the ones I've fixed, the difference was when I removed them they had a catch or drag on the mechanism (usually visible corrosion and build up). When I was finished, it moved effortlessly. That is the way it should be. Did you completely disassemble the unit? Another helpful exercise would be to check out a new one against your unit. I would bet there is a difference. If you can't get the smooth action, you may have to replace it.
As long as it's not out further than when removed, no worries. I would replace that one though. The pintle looks rusted and unlikely to seal well. It should be smooth and shiny.
Thanks for the help guys! I reinstalled everything and the car feels great! I haven't taken it on an extended trip yet, but I anticipate everything will go well. I also happened to do the throttle bypass so the engine bay is a bit more clean now.
