Default 1991 Oil Pan Gasket Thread

Hi all, pulled oil pan from my C4. There are pieces of oil pan gasket inside the pump and oil pump screen. Parts of the oil level sensor were floating around, too.

I have a GM (Rubber, Metal) gasket and oil pump I purchased years ago still in the original packaging. I compared the GM gasket to the Fel-Pro rubber gasket and the Fel-Pro certainly looks much more durable than the original GM. I'm sure I'm going with the Fel-Pro on the install. Any thoughts?

Also, I'm needing to know if there is an Oil Pump gasket/seal that sits between the bottom of engine and pump? I can't seem to find one online and the Fel-Pro kit I purchased does not have one. Thanks

No gasket pump to block

Pan gasket I'd guess a personal choice

New retainer for oil pump drive if you don't already have

Ok, thanks. Do you have an item number of part number for the Oil Pump drive retainer?

I found the retainer here in town. Thanks.

Is there anything I can look for while the pan is off to figure out if the rear main seal is leaking? Is changing the rear main seal something I should consider since the pan is off or does it even matter for a C4?

Also, any helpful tricks to installing the oil pump screen into the pump? I know it can get pretty tight trying to get the screen shaft into the pump. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

The rear main will let you know when it's leaking. You might wipe clean and dry the converter cover so that you could "eye-ball" it later to see if there's anything dripping. If it's dripping now .. is it ATF or engine oil? The rear main is a certainly a more labor intensive operation. Is it an A4 or an M6?

It might be nice to have the screen "tack-welded" to the pump.

You have to pull the trans to replace the rear main seal.

Ok, thanks. I will go ahead and reinstall oil pan today. Do you know of any "how to" existing for the rear main seal job?

I haven't pulled an auto, but I have pulled a M6...it ain't rocket science but it is labor intensive. Honestly, before I dove into that job, I'd try putting some sort of seal restorer in with the oil that softens and slightly swells the seal material and then see if I could live with it until the car needed transmission work or the engine pulled.

on another note, how in the holy heck did the pan gasket or parts thereof ever end up in the oil pan and pump screen? that's something I've never seen.

And yes, if you google it, I'm certain the are multiple U tube videos on pulling corvette transmissions.

Thanks. Yes, I'm puzzled with pieces of the gasket in the pan and screen. The oil pan leaks were really bad. I think that gasket just started falling apart. A few bolts were pretty loose, as well. I'll look closer to make sure it is actually 's gasket material.

Hi all, getting oil pan, starter, etc put back on my 91. I noticed two switches right above the oil cooler housing on the engine block. These both appear to be leaking heavily, as well. I'm assuming one of these is an oil temperature sensor? Any ideas what the other one is? Thanks.

On the left side forward of the OTS is a KS (knock sensor) but that can't leak oil. The OPS is mounted at a right angle "higher" on the block and maybe could be assumed to be on the side of the block.

Check the FSM in 8A-201 section to ID components top, left, right, front of and side of engine.

A 91 (any small block from at least 86 for that matter) should have a very durable one piece (usually blue) oil pan gasket; I've never heard of one deteriorating in the manner you describe. Someone may have mistakenly installed an early multi piece cork style gasket which could explain all the symptoms you report.

Will do. It's not the oil pressure sensors; They've been changed recently and the around them is dry. The sensors I'm speaking of mount right above the oil cooler housing that the Oil filter mounts to. I'll certainly check the manual; Thanks.

Hi mtwooford, thanks for the comments. The gasket was the metal/rubber OEM combination. I'm puzzled at home it deteriorated. It was certainly pieces of the rubber gasket inside the pan. I supposed it was just old with a ton of miles.

There's only the temp switch there and G104 with multiple wires attached that maybe could be visually (quick glance) be misinterpreted as a sender/sensor because of the wires and leaking VC gaskets would likely run to that vicinity.

Ok I see; I'll change the temp switch. I do recall there being a few wires there; What's the purpose of the G104?

A ground for nearly everything you can imagine. Again the 8A-section of the FSM - look at "ground distribution". 8A-14 in all FSM or thereabouts should be the look at. The 8A-201 section of the FSM is one of the more informative sections there is.

I crunk her up today; Let her run for 15 minutes or so and so far so good no leaks from the oil pan, valve covers, dip stick tube, oil cooler housing or oil sending temp sending unit. Can't wait to get her off the ramps and roll!
