My 94 coupe has 121,000 miles on it and just my luck the water pump and opti-spark went out on me. Since I am replacing both of these and will have most of the front of my motor apart to clean the motor and radiator removed to clean it too, Should I replace my timing chain and gears and if so what is the best type or brand to go with????? Will also be replacing all hoses, belts, plugs, plug wires, thermostat, and cleaning out throttle body too. Any good hints or ideas would be appreciated. I am very mechanically inclined and have worked on other chevrolets in the past though never a corvette until now. :chevy :seeya
Might I suggest that if your going to go through all that trouble, you upgrade the front cover, get a Coyles double roller chain ($85 and cheaper than the GM heavy duty) and switch to the vented opti. That's what I did when I rebuilt mine. Newer opti is $125 cheaper than the older style from Jeff Kopp.
There only three choices that I know of for a 94 LT1 timing chain. They are the stock chain, Dynagear makes a roller chain, and Cloyes makes a T/C (+$400). Either way with that many miles and already having the engine apart for the opti change, I would change the T/C.
The price I quoted above is accurate. I paid $82.95 for my Cloyes True Double roller Timing Chain and gears (Speed Demon). I got the front cover for $66 (Jeff Kopp).
I'd put a chain in there for sure. I changed mine at 100k .....I'll change it again at 200k (23K from now). I like the TRW chain I got from my local machine shop and it has three indexes on it so I can advance or retard the cam .........I have it straight up right now.......... :seeya
The $400+ Cloyes is a direct replacement and still allows you to use the stock water pump. The $80 unit is the one most people go to but have to go to an electric in order for it to work.
As for the original poster, put a new stock chain in and inspect the chain gears. If either show wear, replace them as well. I pulled a chain off my $80K mile '92 and the gears looked brand new still. So I just changed the cam gear since I did not want to hassle with pulling the crank gear anyway. That is the best advice I can give.
Thanks for the clarification. Wasn't aware of the other set. Also didn't realise that it forced you to go to the electric water pump. Was doing that anyway so.....
The Dynagear rep that I spoke with said that their roller timing chain was a direct replacement. The Dynagear T/C sell for around $85 at Advanced Auto and AutoZone.
Unless it is a new product, I would be VERY sceptical about it being a direct replacement double roller for $85. I would expect to be able to find information on it everywhere on the net if that were the case because the F-body guys would be all over it. If it is a direct replacement, I will seriously doubt it is a double roller.
One reason the Cloyes replacement is so expensive because they are using billet gears.
Not trying to start a debate, I just don't have a lot of trust that reps know what they are talking about.
Can you run a double roller chain with the stock water pump? I replaced mine with the GMPP HD unit, it's made by Cloyes and a very tough peice...I would recommend it to anyone looking to replace their timing chain.

I understand what you are saying, and I have never heard the Dynagear T/C discussed on any of the boards. I did go to Advanced Auto and they do have a Dynagear roller listed as a replacement for a 94 chain. I guess when I get my stock T/C off, I will take it to Advanced Auto and compare.

Not on any that I've ever seen. The stock water pump drive gear meshes with cam gear behind the timing chain. In a double roller the space behind is used for the other half of the chain.
I bought a Cloyes Double Roller for $75 off of a forum member. I am very impressed with the quality. It's really a serious piece.

The GMPP HD timing set can only be used with the 95/96 style opti, it won't work with the pre 95 style.
Thanks guys for all the help. Will be checking into them this weekend and hopefully installing it next weekend. have a lot of work to do to get this thing back in order :(
