Default shift lever ceiling

Dear friends, I need to buy a part or piece for my 1988 C4 Corvette, and I ask for your help since I am not sure about what I need. I am from Spain, so my english is not perfect, and I do not know how to find this part or what is its name.

My car has a manual 4+3 overdrive transmission. Those of you familiar with this, know that for the 1st and 2nd gears, the shift lever mus be moved to the left first, then ahead (1st) or backward (2nd).

Ok, I will try to explain myself. The problem of mi car is that, if you pull the shift lever to the top left, it won't go ahead or backward, so you can no change gears.

So, to put the 1st or 2nd gear, I must move the lever to the left, but not to the top. I move it slightly, then ahead or backward, and the gears enter well. This does not seem serious or a big issue, but when driving and you need inmediate response, some times I remember "oh, not to the top, not to the top", and I loose some precious seconds, and in any case it is not nice.

The mechanic already removed the shift cover and examined the lever. He has told me that there is a little metal piece that precisely works as a stop or ceiling for the lever, so it can not go completely to the left (reserved for the reverse gear as you know). He said that this piece is worn and must be replaced. He said also that it is a very little, simple and proabily cheap piece.

Please, can you tell my what is this piece or part name and where to find it on internet? Thank you very much for your help!

Is the part you want internal "in the transmission" - meaning that your mechanic removed the side cover which has 9 bolts I believe or is what you want external of the transmission and would be considered part of the shifter? I have images of both BUT the shifter isn't serviced in pieces.

Dear friend, I am not sure. I am sure that the mechanic removed a cover, but I though it was on top, not at the side. However, he told me that, at the base of the lever, there is this metal piece that is worn. According to his words, it is simply a piece to stop the lever so it can not move more to the left, then the 1st and 2nd gears enter smoothly.

If you have images of both, maybe can you share them? I think that this is an internal piece (not part of the shifter itself), but honestly I am not sure.

Thank you very much!

I have some other images but this is from a GMSPO and you can see there are no "service parts" for the shifter proper. You might show this image to your mechanic.

I'll include a couple links also for you:

Side cover is in this link. You could show him and just ask if that's what he removed.

Do you have a copy of the FSM? Perhaps proper adjustment of the shifter would accomplish a fix for you. I used the email link under your "user ID" to send you a message. Check your email.

Here's a picture of the shifter from a 86 FSM. I can't compare versus what you have as the transmission in my car was replaced with a Tremec 5 speed prior to my purchasing it.

Hope this helps

Thank you for all your help, but this is too much technical info for me.

Simply, I asked here, so maybe one user can tell me exactly what piece I need according to my description, or ever share a link to a store who sells this piece (ecklers, corvette central, etc.).

As said, this metallic piece should be in the base of the lever, so it can not go further to the left. I suppose that the lever movements are limited by one or more pieces of this kind. I am affraid that this is the only info that I can provide :-( I can not tell you what number piece of these schemes it is the one I need, because it is sure that I will be mistaken. That is precisely what I am asking.

PD: I have seen that my email associated to this account was old and no longer exist. I have updated the email to the correct one. If WVZR-1 please can re-send your message, it would be very much appreciated.

well the good news and the bad news, and there really is no good news; the shifter assembly (#14) itself has no separate repairable or replacement parts; so while your mechanic may be entirely correct, this appears to be a repair by replacement of the whole assembly.

Part numbers for the shifter assembly #14:
control trans (1985-1988) (2nd design, overdrive switch on shift ****) p/n 10132798;
control trans (1984-1988) (1st design overdrive switch on console) p/n 14050078

more potential bad news is that the shifter assembly (unlike some aftermarket shifters) did not use replaceable bushings on the shift rods or control arms, so the levers coming out of the bottom of the shifter assembly may have holes worn oversize, or the corresponding areas of the shifter rod (#26) maybe worn undersize;

as stated the arms coming out of the shifter assembly are not serviceable (but could be repaired)

#26, Rod, control selector lever p/n 14048954 (first and second gear)
#27 Lever, trans selector (first and second gear) p/n 14048951

if there's any good news its that, assuming no excessive wear, adjustment of the pin assembly on the forward end of the shifter rod (#26) may limit the movement of the lever (#27) enough to cure your problem.
