Default Performance without re-tuning

Stock 89 with auto trans, 50,000 miles

Here's the problem. Can't find any place that will dyno tune my year car, so that if I add a better cam, intake, and other idems , I can still have it run correctly? I know some things such as headers and cat backs do not require a re-tune. I have read anything I can get my hands on about tuning the Ecu.
I have even bought a chip burner and have changed things such as fan temp settings, disabled vats, and increased idle rpm, but not compenent in trying to change A/F or spark advance, etc. Even thought about Buying OSTRICH and trying to find shop that will tune it, but no luck.

If I just change cam, add headers and cat back, how would my car run without re-tune. How about idle?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Texas is HUGE and there is serious money there with crazy cars, has to be a dyno shop some where, or you have to try mail order tunes.

You would think I could find someplace, but I can't. Looked on line and did other things I can think of, but no luck. Even called some of them so I could talk to them about it. Don't want to do mail order tune

Your best bet if you can't find someone local is to go mail order with one of the tuners that has been recommended here on the Forum. You will have to do some data logging to get the final tune dialed in to your satisfaction.

If you change the cam....you will positively have to tune.

I'm not fond of mail order, tried twice and it's ok. Not fond of paying for dyno tune that if I change something later I gotta pay again. Not really fond of spending a whole lot of time learning to tune myself when I got other cars to build, tune theirs carb, setup suspension and work out bugs. In fact I got my TPI maf car to not hassle with too much and play with some while building my other cars, but even with my mild mods I know it's needs a good tune and I've spent way more time messing with the car than I had hoped. I was looking at EBL flash for a easy DIY tune setup but I'd think I'd rather save up for the Holley HP EFI. Still It's not in the budget for this year as my other cars got priority.

Depends on:

1. how far you are willing to travel
2. what you define as "mail order" tune
3. how far you are willing to go to stretch your dollar.

1. I have towed a car 6 hours away to get a tune from Lingenfelter when he was alive since he was doing the tunes personally.

2. If you are saying "I tell you what I did and you write the program", you are going to have to rely on how good that tuner is AND understand that no tuner worth his salt is going to give you the best tune possible since it would be too risky without seeing the car. If he is having you datalog and he write it till he is satisfied, I wouldn't have an issue.

3. If you don't tune, you are going to have to do one of two things. Spend a lot of time to get around keeping the car happy by trial and error where you keep tweaking it to get the fuel mixture right. So increase air, increase fuel. The other way is to keep the mods mild enough to keep the ECM within the window of adjustment. You will not get the most bang for your buck with that approach.

That said, my tuner can get somewhat close. http://www.hitechmotorsport.com/tuni...category_id=76

You expecting to buy a lifetime tune for the price of a 1 off deal? That is only necessary if you tune it and then do some major mods and the new mods you added cannot adjust since they are radical enough to be outside the window of adjustment.

The major problem today is that there are not too many shops that can or know how to tune the C4. They would rather work on C5's and up.

Tried Hitech yet? They dyno tuned mine and they can do some sort of chip via what you tell them. You could send the car there and have them install and tune all at once. Last time I checked a few years ago they had a "Winter special" on rates.

Solomon @ LT1 PCM Tuning does tuning by email even for the TPI that need chips burned. U have to buy some cabling hardware and borrow some of his hardware to datalog your car. Then he can burn a chip with a tune for your car from that data log. U get free retunes also. Check it out: http://www.lt1pcmtuning.com/service/#Email

If that dont work and u cant find a local tuner for your TPI ECM and u dont want to use mail order then u need to contact your senator and join a prayer group.

Good luck and happy new year.

I don't want to use mail order unless they have datalog and I don't have a local tuner. However, I am able to tow or have the car transported somewhere that does. Did that from Madison, WI to Decatur, IN and later to Elk River, MN.

I can't afford my senator since the help he/she gives comes with a price that I can't afford. It would be cheaper to drive the car off a cliff, claim insurance and get a newer car that is easily tuned.

Prayer has not worked for anything for me yet nor, I suspect will it ever since I can't do a virgin sacrifice legally.
