I have a 700R4 in my 85, and having recently lost 3rd gear for the second time in approximately 7000 miles :( , I removed the valvebody for inspection.
I completely disassembled the valvebody, and in addition to finding a few valve assemblies were a little sticky, I found that the'converter clutch throttle sleeve'(item 305 in pic link) was replaced with a solid aluminum slug; and the 'converter clutch throttle valve' (item 307), and the 'converter clutch throttle spring(item 306) were non existent. the 'converter clutch shift valve'(item 308) was still there, but had no spring to work against.
Anyone have any ideas as to why those parts were replaced with a slug, and what that does to the transmission operation? Good thing or bad?
Thanks in advance for any and all comments.
Sounds like someone has already gone through it and either used the B&M TransKit or equivalent. Check to see if it looks like there has been a small, non factory hole drilled into your VB casing near the throttle valve (at like a 30 degree angle). It would also be an OK time to check to see if your accumulator spring has been replaced with an aluminum sleeve.
I was unhappy with my B&M TransKit even after upgrading all of the internals they suggested. Yeah, it is good for firm shifts. But in my case, I was better off using DZus 1/4 turn fasteners on the bellhousing and driveshaft seeing how many times I had to "remodel" it due to the fact that the harshness broke the parts they suggested to use.
I am sure that if I was a tranny mechanic, I might have had a few better ways to do things. In my case, following the instructions just didn't work out like it should have.
Live and learn :yesnod: Good luck with yours. -Matt-
Thanks for the input Matt. I didn't see hole you mentioned in valvebody near the throttle valve, and accumulator spring was still there.
I'm leaning toward buying a street/strip unit, without a core exchange. Still trying to decide on the source. I've talked to folks at Hughes in /Phoenix, AZ...$1549 plus converter and delivery, with no exchange; REBS in Reseda, CA...$1900 including converter for rebuild of my unit ...ruggedized for strip abuse; and a local shop(Mike's Transmission...High performance and Racing Transmissions, Lancaster,CA) that will rebuild my unit, again, ruggedized for strip ... for $1449 plus converter. All prices assume that I will be doing the removal and reinstallation, and warranty is 90 days for each. My local shop wants $350 more to do the R & R and with that, the warranty period is extended to 6 months...that almost sounds worth the extra cost.... Still looking for other sources.
Anybody else out there haveany comments or similar valve delete in their valvebody?
Those parts look like B&M transpac parts ..........been there before myself .... put one in a trans am for a guy once .......he loved it

The picture in my original post is from the '85 Corvette Shop Manual, from Chevy/Helm...700R4 section. The parts that I referenced, items 305, 306, & 307 in the valvebody exploded parts view were missing. Are you saying that the B&M transpac supplies a solid slug to take their place?
I put the B&M transpack in my '84. What you have sounds about right. Also, check the accumulators to see if the springs have been replaced with spacers. How hard is the 1-2 shift? Mine will snap your neck.
