Default Quietest exhaust...

What's the quietest but still "Good" exhaust system? I don't want to hear it much inside the car. The Muffler elims I have are great, but i want something new..

Now, why would you want that? I use my aftermarket exhaust noise as a tachometer when the stereo's loud... rather than look at the dash.

I've been curious about quiet performance exhaust, (if it exists), as I want to get the most free-flowing yet quietest exhaust for my soon to be sleeper Ford project. The man at the exhaust shop said louder=freeflowing, and no luck for me. But of course, he had a small selection, and probably didn't want me shopping elsewhere.

I don't believe it. You want silence    from a V8. I have EPS exhaust, no cat's and the sound is flabbergasting  the soun from the back is enormous and louder than the sound in front of me.

I love the sound of a roaring V8, I think the problem is you are used to it. We have to live with a fast majority of 4 cylinders  the sound of a smooth running V8 is :D for sore ears...

Default Re: Quietest exhaust... (JP's C4)

Although theoretically possible with noise cancelling technology, the term "quiet performance exhaust" is a practical oxymoron.

The quietest exhausts have small pipes, lots of expansion chamber, and ultimately produce just a hiss as the gas escapes at uniform velocity, all the pressure waves having cooled and cancelled themselves out internally. Listen to a Cadillac sedan while it accelerates.

The best performance exhaust has large pipes and straight lines, with any expansion chamber built around the pipes, whose internal diameter is fully preserved. Look at an old Jag XKE for example, 3 sets of coaxial mufflers along the exhaust pipe from engine to outlet. The goal is to keep exhaust velocity as high a possible, with the least restriction to flow. The result is that you hear the sound pulses of combustion at the exhaust outlet. Very sweet sound, and expensive to make.

Simple enough at the extremes. On a Vette, the "best" practical performance exhaust would be long tube headers, 3" pipes all the way back (or joined to form a larger common pipe down the middle) into dual 3" I/O coaxial mufflers. Very low restriction, large amount of noise. All the major exhaust manufacturers (Borla, Flowmaster, Corsa, Power Effects) tighten it up from there (smaller 2 1/2" or 2 3/4" pipes, smaller I/O muffler, multiple exhaust flow path reversals in the muffler, adjustable valves in the muffler, etc). In various combinations this gives less noise and somewhat greater restriction to flow. If done right, not too much resonance or harshness.

Also remember that engine mods such as a bigger cam can change or increase exhaust noise. Also, Cats effectively function as a muffler, so if you remove them, the noise goes up.

Where on the spectrum of loud you want to be is very subjective. This forum can (and has) argued ad nauseum relative merits and resonances. You really need to listen to a car with the exhaust you contemplate purchasing. Sound files are OK, but do not really capture the reality in the driver's seat.

Good Luck!!

They dont make Corsas for 86's guys.

Maybe you should try a Power Effects system, in closed it is louder than stock, but not really that loud. And you can open it up and set off car alarms.

All the rest of them, Flowmaster, Borla, B&B have resonance problems, but you should try to hear them anyway.

I love PE's but not in the budget.

I like the idea of the stock zr1 muffler...

Come to Downers Grove and TAKE my 1996 stock set off my vert. I had the car in at the dealer for service about a month ago. The Corvette tech. that serviced the car came up to me and said and I quote, "That is the quietest Corvette I have ever driven", did you change the mufflers? :U

You can get just the PE "Power Capsule" for around $800. I couldn't tell much difference with between the stock resonator and PE resonsator except the $500.

Try Dynomax Ultra Flow SS's. They're not too expensive, and on my friends big block buick (66 GS) they're pretty damn quiet. (and he's got a hefty motor)

I have one other suggestion. It is not the quietest but there is no resonance, I had the Magnaflow mufflers on my 86. I liked the sound, slightly louder than my Corsas but very easy to live with.

You could always go with flowmaster.

Huh, what's that? Oh you said QUIET? I couldn't hear you!

Yeah they're loud inside but man do they sound mean! I'd say for queit your really can't beat the stock system. Perhaps try to get the stock system off of an LT1 / LT4 for a little better design.

Some reply, great. I was told, less is more. 3" Stainless pipe, no dempers, no cat, nothing, awsome sound! :)

Check out: http://www.uitlaten.com

Uitlaten is Dutch for exhaust.
