Default L98 Tune up

Hey guys,

So I just saw a thread on a 94 LT4 tune up and got a lot of great info out of it, figured I would see what people had to say about the L98.

Basically when buying a "new to me" car with an L98 in it ('89 C4 specifically) what should I look to get done quick to ensure it keeps on chugging for me. I'm looking around the 125k-150k mark in miles on the buy.

Besides the normal fluid swap and plug check what else can you guys recommend? I'm trying to budget to figure out how much I'll put into the car right up front as preventative maintenance.

Cheers

All new hoses. Check the hoses first, you will find a date in white lettering somewhere on the hose. If they are over 4 years old, suggest you change them out. RockAuto has good prices on these if you can wait a coupld of days for shipping.

Check distributor cap and rotor. Plug wires. Replace PCV valve. Air filter.

Automatic or manual? Automatics normally last 120,000- 130,000 before needing to be rebuilt.....depending on your are and shop...$2700.

If the current owner has kept detailed records of maintenance then look at things like U-joints and wheel bearings.

I would also figure in o2 sensors and cleaning the throttle body, including the iac.

If you are going to clean the IAC on the bottom ot the throttle body, us something like PB Blaster or a mixture of 50/50 acetone and ATF (best penetrating mix out there) on the screws that hold the IAC to the TB. Soak them for a day. They tend to corrode and bind.

When assembling things back together....always use anti-seize on any bolt that goes into aluminum.

Gotcha, thanks for the heads up... nothing worse than trying to do some work only to snap a bolt. I'm more than familiar with this after working on my Jeep as much as I do lol

I see some of the ones I listed already have plus a some not listed.
Not just maint but general stuff too:

Check the tires both in tread depth and age, check the air pressure
Check the brake pads along with the hoses
U-Joints on the half-shafts and driveshaft
Check the brake master cylinder and powersteering fluid - likely replace
Oil change including filter
Check rearend fluid and replace as needed
Tranny fluid and filter change
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Check the spare tire
Check to insure you have a jack and lug wrench
Pick up some spare fuses
Make sure you have the lugnut key if one is present
If you get fobs for the locks, insure they work
Insure you get at least 2 keys or plan to have them made.
Lube the door hinges etc.
Check the ball joints
Check the suspension bushings
Check all the lights
Check the condition of the shocks
Check to insure the a/c works (if it has one)
Get any maint records you can on the car
Get a decent floor jack and some jackstands for when needed.

Plan on at least one shearing off. Those bolts are real bastards.
