got a 1989 C4 auto , had the auto rebuilt which then left a slight vibration , and the mechanic complained the rear end was very noisy . Had all the wheels balanced , all three drive shafts checked and new universals and new front steel drive shaft . had the differential rebuilt recently and wheel bearings done about 8000 miles ago . Changed the tyres also and it's not as noisy now but you can still hear it . Question is , is that normal to have a rear end noise or what ?? PS nick named this C4 the money pit . cheers
did they change the teflon washers? did they put the additive in the rear end?
no idea what teflon washers you mean and the diff has the correct additives , diff was done by a diff specialist with a kit that i bought from ecklers , and thanks for your input , cheers

I put a new wheel bearing in 5000 miles ago rear right and it is already bad so it could be the bearing . Before I put it in the old onw made a humming sound this one is not that bad yet. I think I had to order them separately from a Las Vegas Chevy dealership.
Good Luck
ok thanks i will order new rear wheel bearings and washers and hopefully eliminate the noise , cheers . Thing is that i thought it might be the bearings even though they have not done too many miles really , and there is no play in them either when i checked them . Thanks for the tip champ , cheers

Hi my originals were replaced last year at 170,000 miles, I got hold of some Delco new old stock rear wheel bearings.
The Teflon washer does not come with new wheel bearings...
You do not want to use cheap EBAY wheel bearings, go for Timken / SKF they are good brands that last.
Remember to torque the spindle nut to at least 164 foot pounds, it got revised even higher in service bulletins. You need a 36mm socket and a long pipe for leverage.
ok thanks for that and i live in western australia so will have to order them from ecklers or corvette central thanks again cheers
If you raise up the back I had play as my humming was caused by a right rear bearing that was in half if you have no play I don't believe the Teflon washer is at fault it is known for sgueaking. Even with my bad bearing that I have in my car does not make any noises or humming just a squeaking when I turn right but it has 1/8th inch play. I don't think your bearing are bad from your description if you don't have any play in them. Double check differential. The rebuild kits don't include the 2 bottles of additive it is possible they forgot to put it in unless you watched them as I did.
ok , cool thanks for that .Thing is that i got the diff specialist to put the new kit in , but i put it back in the car , he gave me the diff oil and friction modifier to put in it though . Funny thing is that after a couple of weeks i noticed an oil leak under the diff . The very bottom bolt that holds the diff to the batwing had snapped and that was enough to break the seal and let the oil out . Tried to drill a hole in the bolt but failed , so i drilled and tapped a hole either side of it and put new marine grade stainless steel bolts and washers in . A bit of sealer then put diff oil and friction modifier back in . I always thought that rear wheel bearings already had a spacer in them , or do you chuck that out and put this teflon spacer in , or what ?? and thanks again
