I was stuck in the 14's with my 86 coupe and then tried almost every HP mod, then I changed my wheels from the stock 16 "x 9 1/2" to 17"x11" rear wheels. My times went from a 14.03 60Ft 2.065 1/4 mph 98.24 to 13.77.60FT time 1.904 1/4 mph 99.38. It cost a few bucks but it was worth the $$$. The ZR 1 chrome wheels look good too.
No substitute for traction. Wider tread= more traction. Thats why the Viper wears 335 tires on 13" rims. Too bad they're so hard to fit under the Vette.

Please explain a little more. The 17x11 wheels are heavier than the 16x9.5.
Did you 60' times change ? Can you list the entire timeslip ? Thanks.
If you got more traction , then I understand, otherwise heavier wheels will make you go slower.
Also, check the tire height on the new tires/rims as compared to your 16" tires/rims. If the 17" combo is shorter, it effective acts like you put better gears in. Not sure if this is the case with your setup. I'd also like to know where you made up the time. Check your timeslips & let us know. Just a thought, as I have read topics on this before. Scott

I don't think they are. Granted they are much larger. But they are definitely lighter than sawblades by a long shot. The GS 17x11 5 spoke pattern is very open and uses less metal than earlier wheel designs. The addtional weight of the larger tire does add in there but the overall increase is not that much.
Your times are better due to the better traction. Also, you probably have night and day handling over the smaller 16" rims. I believe 88 was when 17" rims were first used. They will just bolt on the earlier cars with a spacer. They come highly recommended as upgrades. Biggest performance change I've made yet. Remember, everything you do, acceleration, braking, handling, all eventually must translate to the ground through your tires. The larger the contact patch and better the tire, the better your car will work. I've outhandled stock C5s on drives due only to the better tires I have.
When I changed to 17" RIMS I also put on new 17" 275/40/17 front and 315/35/17 rear Dunlap Z rated tires. I did not weigh the new or the old tires and rims, but I will and give the amounts on my next post. To answer another question the rims needed no spacers and they came with a 33 offset.
:D  :D :chevy
