I just bought my 88. I disassembled my digital dash gauge cluster because of how filthy it was and I needed to replace a lamp socket. The cleaning went fine and during disassembly I noticed a weird S shaped clip near the top of the center display. Well... not wanting to leave out any thing important I put it back when I re-assembled it. It slid down a little - un noticed by me and when I tightened the assembly back together it shattered the top of the center display. Now the volts and coolant temp don't work.
Hopefully this will help someone else from making the same mistake.
On the same note. Any one have a Digital Dash Gauge cluster for sale?
You might try Contemporary Corvette (link on my site) or another Vette bone yard (maybe even C&V, local to you). Maybe you can get a digi display that doesn't work but has the LCD in tact on the cheap.
You might want to check this guy. http://www.gordonkillebrew.com/ He was the tech guru at the Vette plant for all the C4's and he has a near photographic memory. He should be able to tell you where to get it fixed cheap or find a new one. I talked to him this morning at the Museum and he said a friend of his just bought a business fixing them so it might be worth a try. :seeya
I did something very similar on reassembling my dash. Found a junkyard owner on the vette net that had a replacement lcd assembly for $50.
Look around, I'll bet you'll find something similar. It's certainly cheaper than the $300 they want for a 'rebuildable' dash. (If one of the LCD's is cracked, is it considered rebuildable?!?!)
