Default Reinstalling Under Dash Trim

Guys,

sounds like a stupid question, but on my 1987, I had the carpet replaced on the underside of the dash on the passenger side - but for the life of me can't get a self tapping screw to engage and secure the plastic trim

The trim I'm talking out has a light and cutout for the HVAC vent.
If the passenger lifted their feet whilst sitting, they'd kick it...

Hope that explains what I'm referring to.

My question: Is there any "inserts" the screws should "bite" into?

As there were no screws holding it in the first place, help on the size screw required would also be great.

With the carpet covering any "inserts", i can't see what they need to attach to - should've taken a pic first
Can't feel anything with my fingers as well

A pic of the underside minus carpet would be awesome

There are metal clips everywhere. No screw in the dash screws into plastic that I can think of. So if there isn't a metal clip then its missing one there.

Thanks,

anyone got a pic of the underside of the dash to help locate the inserts?

That's one area I never thought to take pics of.

Most of the spots where the clips go are square holes. Kind of stand out.

I just dropped the RH side, under dash, plastic panel on my 85. seems to me, there are four m4.2 screws holding the plastic panel in place. i'll try to get a pic or two sometime this morning -

here's some pics from my 85 - my plastic trim panel has 3, maybe 4 holes for mounting screws. the edge of the carpeted panel has 4 clip-on nuts, but the edge of the plastic panel only has 3 holes - seems like one hole is missing. there is another oval, slotted, hole on the front side plastic trim panel that MAY screw into the bottom of the heater core housing, however I DID NOT have a screw there. I need to investigate that a bit more. anyway, here a few pics - hope this helps...

I may drill a 4th hole to pick up the 4th clip-on nut, and see if the boss on the bottom of the heater core housing is actually for a screw.
