back firing

Hi
What would cause my car to back fire when it hit the gas. Car runs great but I'm wondering why it back fires when the hit the gas and ease off.
thanks. I have a 1984 corvette

How old is the o2?

the car is basically original
it has 60,000 miles on it
I have owned it for 2 years
I have replaced plugs and cables already
so more likely it has not been replaced

It might have weak fuel pressure.

always a good thing to check. O2's get old and slow and not show a code. Mine gave me fits before they put a code out.

Change the O2 sensor (probably needs one anyway and inexpensive). If that doesn't help, do a leak down test. A bad valve can cause backfiring.

I did my first timing today... made a rookie error and didn't disconnect the EST wire. I set it to 6 BTDC then went for a ride to feel how my perfectly timed 86 ran... Well I floored it and sure as $#!+ when I let off the gas boom boom pow... backfire. Came back home and found this thread posted below, did the timing the right way and now she is running like a charm.

It is probably your timing but before you check it read this thread...
