Just another thought about your engine repair.

If you have an oil cooler that should be replaced or flushed. You don't want that oil to wash back into the fresh engine!

Best of luck.

Yeah I am really sure the shavings are from the rod or main bearings.

I willl pull the motor in a few weeks and begin the trek to ever more HP via the ever powerful (sometimes) dollar!

Also thanks for the heads up on the oil cooler. I will flush it and everything else, including the radiator!

Test it with a magnet, if it doesn't cling it's a bearing :)

Uh, .... I was able to pick up the metal pieces in my pan, and the rod bearings with a magnet. :)

From the pics, it looks like piston rings. With the pan off, take a look at all the pistons from underneath and see if any of them look odd.
Look at the largest piece in his hand. (Far left) Not only is it too wide to be a piston ring, it's the wrong material. :yesnod: :D

The reason some of the pieces look so thin is because the bearing gets "smushed" and the edges break off first.

Twinnie... I think some bearings are steel. I could be wrong.

I have piston rings that look like that from melting from detonation. The peice in his hand on the far right looks like a shard of ring material, it appears to be the right thickness and shape. Hard to tell thought from the blurry pic.

I find it amazing that you guys can be so certain what a part is that has been mangled and chewed up just by looking at a blurry pic. I was simply taking an alternate suggestion based on the sound of the motor, my personal experiences, and what I saw in the picture as to what the peices could be from and simply suggested he visually inspect them since he had the pan off anyway.

pull a couple rod end caps and and then you can really see if you spun a rod bearing.then pull main brg caps one at a time and see if any of them spun.mechanic at work said that clatter was probably from the bearing spining.once the bearing starves for oil it rides up on top the other half after it has broken the tang off.the squished out piece could be part of the thrust bearing and the other piece could be the edge of bearing or piston ring piece.it is hard to tell as blurry as it is.

Hey guys sorry to keep you all guessing. I will pull the motor out of the car in a month or so. It will be down till next spring so I am in no hurry. This Saturday I will remove some rod caps and look at them then. That’s as far as I want to go till the motor is on a stand. My gut feel by looking at the shape of the shavings though is bearing material but wont know till maybe Saturday. I'll fill you in then with a new post.

I am still in denial I think!
